How to Prepare Your Backyard for a New Above Ground Pool

Welcome to Bonnie & Clyde’s Pools and Spas! If you’re considering adding a new above ground pool to your backyard, you’ve made a fantastic choice. Not only do above ground pools offer endless hours of fun and relaxation, but they’re also a great way to enhance your outdoor living space. Before you immerse yourself in the cool waters, there are a few essential steps you need to take to prepare your backyard for your new pool. Let’s get started!

1. Choose the Perfect Spot

Selecting the right location for your above ground pool is your first consideration. Look for a level area in your backyard that receives a good amount of sunlight throughout the day. Avoid placing your pool under trees to minimize debris and under power lines for safety reasons. Also, consider the proximity to your house for convenience and the view from your home and yard. Easements or property things to think through? Look at the big picture to properly locate your perfect pool.

2. Measure and Mark the Area

Once you’ve chosen the spot, measure the dimensions of your pool and mark the area with stakes and string. This will give you a clear visual of where your pool will sit and help you ensure that there’s enough space for installation and surrounding accessories.

3. Level the Ground

A level surface is critical for the stability and longevity of your above ground pool. Use a long level or a transit level to check the ground. If it’s not level, you’ll need to remove high spots and fill in low spots with soil or sand. Make sure to compact the soil firmly after leveling.

4. Add a Base Layer

To protect the bottom of your pool, it’s a good idea to add a base layer of sand or a commercial pool pad. This layer should be about two to three inches thick and extend a few inches beyond the pool’s perimeter. It provides a smooth, protective surface for the pool liner and adds an extra layer of cushioning.

5. Install Proper Drainage

Ensure that your backyard has proper drainage to prevent water from pooling around the base of your pool. You may need to install a French drain or regrade the area slightly to direct water away from the pool.

6. Check for Utilities and Septic Tank

Before you start digging or leveling, it’s important to check for underground utilities. Call your local utility companies to mark any gas, water, or electrical lines to avoid any accidents during installation. Additionally, if you have a septic tank, make sure to locate it and avoid building your pool over it.

7. Prepare for Electrical Connections

Above ground pools often require electrical connections for pumps and lighting. Have a licensed electrician install a dedicated circuit and GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets according to local codes and regulations.

8. Plan for Landscaping and Accessories

Think about how you want to enhance the area around your pool. You might consider adding decking, a patio, or landscaping to create a beautiful and functional poolside oasis. Also, plan for storage space for pool accessories and maintenance equipment.

9. Review Local Regulations and Permits

Before you begin the installation, check with your local municipality to understand any zoning regulations, building codes, or permits required for above ground pools. This will ensure that your pool is compliant and safe.

10. Choose Your New Above Ground Pool
