Adding shade to your pool deck is like anything else; it can be a simple DIY project, or you can go all-in and make this a several year process. We’ll cover both sides of the spectrum for you so by the time you’re done, you’re sure to be one cool cat! (See what we did there?)
What are my options?
You’ve got a ton of options! Literally, anything you can think of that will cast some shade will work. However, we know that’s not very helpful. So we’ll get you started with some popular ideas that we like.
Umbrellas:
More specifically, patio umbrellas. (There is a difference.) This can be a really fun option. You’ve got all kinds of shapes and sizes to choose from, and you can pick out a color that matches everything to the T, or perhaps something a bit more “out there” that will make your entire deck just “pop.”
Planting trees:
“Ah, I see what you mean by this taking several years now.” Yep. It’s not a quick fix (if you’re planting seeds or small plants), but adding trees to your deck can be a beautiful way to organically cover that deck. Plus, a tree that comes out of the middle of a deck looks amazing. You’ll get extra cool points for this one.
Shade sails:
Think of a ship sail, and that’s basically what you’re working with. Not only will you be covered from the sun, but a true shade sail provides a unique aesthetic that’s sure to impress friends and family.
Cabanas:
“Her name was Lola, she was- ” Not the type of cabana we’re talking about, but still a good song. Cabanas are a bit tricky. They technically need to be closed off on most sides in order to be considered a proper cabana, so you’re going to need curtains or drapes, etc. Even so, if you’re looking for a more upscale addition to your backyard, this is a great option.
Awnings:
These are popular for a reason. Big, simple, and effective. You can generally attach these to your roof for full coverage over the deck, or you can choose a smaller option to cover only what you want to. If you go for a solid metal option, you’ll even stave off rain pretty well.
Pools:
Although they might not provide direct shade, pools are a terrific option to help stay cool. Even when you’re sitting in the shade, sometimes you just need to cool off. Check out these stellar pool options.
