Does Snow Affect My Swimming Pool?

The sight of falling snow is often exciting. However, seeing snow fall into or onto your swimming pool might cause a different feeling. You might start to worry about your pool’s well-being. “Does snow affect my swimming pool?” Yes, snow can affect a pool.

Bonnie & Clyde’s Pools and Spas is the local expert on above ground pools. The people of Texas have been relying on us for over four decades for their pools, pool questions, and pool supplies — in Decatur, in Burleson, and all across the Metroplex. Let us share a few effects snow can have on your pool and ways to prevent problems that might arise because of it.

Weight is One Worry

First, the weight of snow can affect your pool over an extended period of time. Although snow is beautiful, it is also very heavy. Snow that rests on your winter cover for a while has the potential to damage a swimming pool.

Prevention One

A preventative measure to help with this issue is to use an air pillow underneath your winter cover. The cushioning afforded by this pillow helps to absorb the pressure of the freezing and thawing of water that happens often during the winter. It is beneficial because it reduces the pressure that is bearing down on the pool walls. A pillow also helps to keep the top of the swimming pool from becoming a solid sheet of ice. You can use more than one pillow also for extra protection.

Prevention Two

Another way to keep the weight of the snow from damaging the pool is to remove the snow when possible. When you get a heavy snowfall, take the time to carefully remove the snow when the storm finishes. Be sure to use soft tools, such as brooms, to work on this important task. Sharp edges and pools don’t go together. If you don’t get the snow removed before it melts, you can also utilize a cover pump to get the excess liquid off.

Chemistry Change is Another Concern

Precipitation in any form can alter the pool’s water chemistry very quickly. Some falling snow or melting snow will inevitably make their way past the winter cover and can change the chemistry. These changes can cause the water to become corrosive. However, you won’t see the damage taking place until you uncover the pool in spring.

Don’t fret though! There are several winterizing chemicals that will help the water stay fairly stable, even during the harshest days of winter. We have our very own pool and spa chemicals designed for the Texas climate. Our knowledgeable team can help you with any concerns that you may have about your pool and how it is fairing throughout the winter. Stop by any of our six stores to see us!
