Hot tubs are designed to be kept at warm temperatures and are generally very efficient at doing so. However, what happens when the outside temperature rises to or even above your set temperature? Keeping the water at a reasonable and safe temperature is important, especially when mother nature is adding her own source of heat.
In these types of situations, it can become necessary to take preventative measures to ensure your spa does not overheat. If you find yourself in this situation, consider implementing some of the following procedures.
Turn the Temperature Down
Perhaps one of the easiest ways to keep your hot tub from overheating is to lower the set temperature. By lowering the set temperature, you may still be able to maintain your desired temperature due to the added heat from the outside.
This is particularly effective if you turn down the temperature on your spa prior to the outdoor temperature rising above comfortable temperatures. Spas are designed to hold heat and are well-insulated for this reason. By turning your hot tub temperature down when it’s cooler outside — in the evening or early morning — you can more effectively compensate for the extra heat that the sun will provide during those blistering hot days.
In many cases, spa owners prefer to keep their hot tubs at a lower temperature throughout the summer anyway. Just be sure to adjust the controls based on your desired temperature and the extra heat that you expect the outside temperature to add.
Add Some Shade
Another effective way to keep your hot tub from overheating in the Texas heat is to add some shade. When you add good shade, you are preventing some of the sun’s rays from hitting your spa directly, which can cause it to rise in temperature.
There are a number of ways you could go about adding shade. For a simple solution, consider adding a patio umbrella that hangs over your spa. Other options include installing a sun shade on your porch or building a gazebo over your hot tub area.
Adding shade over your hot tub not only helps keep your spa from overheating but can also help the users stay cool and avoid harmful sun rays.
Vent Your Cover
Hot tub covers are designed to be excellent insulators. Not only do they keep debris out of the water, but they also hold in the heat so your spa heater doesn’t have to overwork. While effective insulation is almost always a good thing, it can backfire when temperatures become too hot.
When rays from the sun beat down on top of your hot tub, it can cause the water inside to become warmer as well. Once that increase in temperature has begun, your spa cover — and other insulation around the shell — will work to keep in it. This is where venting your spa’s cover may come in handy.
Hot tubs and their covers are not designed to let heat escape, so you may have to give them a hand. One of the easiest ways to do this is by propping your spa cover up slightly, possibly with the help of some folded towels or other similar materials.
