It’s true that winter can seem a bit mundane — all the days blurring together with seemingly endless grey skies and indoor activities. But, what if there was a way to add a little splash to your boring afternoons every now and then? If you’re a thrill seeker with an A+ health record, the polar bear plunge may be for you!
What is the Polar Bear Plunge?
This unique event is usually held to raise money for charity, as participants plunge themselves into icy cold water in the dead of winter. But why would anyone want to do such an odd thing? If you ask anyone who’s done it before, they’ll likely tell you it’s an invigorating experience like no other. And the energy-shot feeling can last for two to three days.
Is it safe?
While an icy cold plunge in your swimming pool is relatively safe, it’s not for everyone. Those with heart conditions, or with a family history of stroke or cardiac arrest should probably skip this one. Your body will have the same physiological response to polar plunging as it does vigorous exercise. The cold water causes your blood vessels to constrict, and your body will work overtime to warm itself back up. This causes a rush of dopamine and serotonin, which are also the hormones responsible for the “runner’s high.”
How to Host Your Own Plunge Pool Party
Open up your swimming pool this winter season and invite friends and neighbors over to dive on in. If you want to truly authenticate this experience, you can ask for donations or charge participants a dollar amount, giving the proceeds to a charity of your choice. You can also serve hot cocoa and polar bear themed snacks for the ultimate winter pool party experience.
