Monthly Check Up List for your Pool Cover

During the cooler months of winter, a pool cover is a fantastic way to keep your pool protected until swim season returns. Just like the pool, the cover needs some attention. Checking the Water Level

To protect the pool cover, make sure that the water level stays where it should when the pool is not in use. If the water level is too high, the water touches the cover and causes wet spots. These wet spots attract leaves and other debris. Instead of blowing off of the cover, the debris sits, soaks, and stains.

If the water level is too low, storm debris could damage the cover. The weight of the accumulated precipitation can push the cover down too far and cause permanent sags or dents. Don’t be caught off guard with weather!

Cleaning Regularly

Be sure to incorporate a cleaning of the cover – at least once a month. A leaf blower is great for removing twigs and leaves from the top of the cover. Checking the edges of the cover and straps for unwanted things that get caught is another helpful reminder. Regularly keeping the cover cleared will also prevent small animals from being tempted to retrieve the nuts, leaves, and other morsels that can collect there.

Checking for Repairs and Wrinkles

Holes can be caused from critters who explore the pool cover or from excessive water sitting on top for long periods of time, and this can result in contaminants slowly entering the pool water. Walk around the pool often to look for any of these unwanted openings. Patching the holes can prevent them from spreading and prolong the cover’s usefulness. As you make your rounds, be sure the cover is tight across the pool too, keeping any wrinkles from forming. Pulling out the wrinkles helps to drain the cover. Rain water can cause the cover to slip, so increased rain will require an extra check of the cover to make sure it is smooth and secure. Drying the cover is another option that is necessary sometimes to keep the cover at its best.
