Is Spa Water Safe for My Garden?

Spa water is absolutely amazing. Not only does it heal your mind and body when you soak in your hot tub, but it’s surprisingly recyclable. When it’s time to perform seasonal spa maintenance and drain your hot tub, you can use all that water for a number of things, including lawn and garden care. But you may be wondering, “Is spa water safe for my garden?” Yes!

Flowers and Bushes and Trees, Oh My!

You can water almost any non-edible plant with the “greywater” from your spa. Greywater simply means it contains a non-hazardous material. Try watering your flowers like marigolds and juniper or the aloe in your windowsill. You can even hydrate your bushes and trees. Of course, there are a few exceptions. Rose bushes, for instance, don’t do well with water from a spa. You can always do a bit of trial and error, and if you notice your plants or grass turning yellow, you’ll know to stop.

Safe Chemical Levels for Your Plants

If you want to drain your hot tub completely, stop adding chemicals immediately, and let your hot tub sit uncovered for at least 24 hours. You can even turn on the jets to help dissipate the chemicals. If you’re not ready to do your seasonal drain and refill, but still want to recycle, let a bucket of water sit out overnight to use the next day. Always check the chemical levels before using the water in your garden. Safe levels are:

Chlorine – less than 1.5 ppm
Bromine – 2.0-4.0 ppm
pH – 7.1 ideally, but as high 7.4 should be okay
