Can I Use My Hot Tub in Summer?

As a spa owner, you may have asked yourself, ” Can I use my hot tub in summer?” Don’t worry — you’re not alone. We’re here to help. But to answer this question, we have to mention a few things first.

You can use your hot tub in the summer the same as you can run a red light. That doesn’t mean it’s safe or advised (or legal) to do so. We know what you mean, though: “Is it okay/safe to use my hot tub in the summer?” Thankfully, the answer is yes! You might need to tweak a couple of things, but you can absolutely use your hot tub in the summer. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Change the temperature

You may or may not be familiar with the average hot tub temperature of 104ºF, but now you are! This isn’t a bad temperature to hit in the early mornings or later in the evening, but feel free to adjust it throughout the day. There are plenty of people who enjoy having the water set right around their normal body temperature (about 98ºF). This way it’s still warm, but you may not want HOT water after being outside all day mowing, for example. If 98º is still a little too much you can settle for even lower temperatures (it’s your hot tub, after all).

Are there health risks?

There are no health concerns outside the normal risks of owning a hot tub in the first place. Make sure you’re properly hydrated, don’t stay in longer than you should (30 minutes or less at 98º) – all of the basic principles. You may find you need to take breaks from it more frequently, but that is completely normal.

Do not unplug your hot tub!

You might be tempted to leave everything off for a few days to cool your water off, but there are safer ways to lower the temperature. Have you ever seen a pool or a lake where the water is just sitting there? Everything tends to collect a little bit more, doesn’t it? Let’s keep all of the oils and debris out of your hot tub water, shall we?

If you’re lucky, your hot tub will have a “sleep mode” and/or an “economy” mode. Use these features! Not only will this help cut costs, but you’ll find that your hot tub is considerably cooler because of this.
