How Do I Replace an Above Ground Pool Liner

How Do I Replace an Above Ground Pool Liner?

If you’ve noticed your pool liner isn’t as vibrant as it used to be, is leaking, cracked, stretched or damaged, it may be time to replace it. This may lead to you asking, “How do I replace an above ground pool liner?”

At Bonnie & Clyde’s, we can help you with all your above ground pool needs. We have many pool liner pattern options that are sure to make your pool feel brand new again. Let’s discuss when you should consider replacing your above ground pool liner.

When to Replace an Above Ground Pool Liner

When your pool was new, the pool liner was vibrant, wrinkle free, and sealed tight. Now that you’ve opened your pool for the summer years later, you may be noticing that it doesn’t look or feel the same as it used to.

Signs that may indicate it is time to replace an above ground pool liner include fading, staining, wrinkles and stretching, and even damage that needs repair.

Steps to Replace an Above Ground Pool Liner

To replace your liner you could hire a professional and sit back with a glass of sweet tea. But if you are the do-it-yourself type, that may not be your style. Here are the basic steps to replace an above ground pool liner if you want to try your hand at home.

  1. Drain the water. You can siphon the water out of your pool with a garden hose or rent a submersible pump. When the water is almost out, unhook the liner and pull it to one side. Pool remaining water and pump it out. Keep pulling water into smaller pools until it is all removed.
  2. Remove the old liner. Use a razor knife to cut the liner into small sections. Roll them up and toss them over the wall. For beaded liners, avoid yanking it out of the track. For overlap liners, remove the top rails to release the liner.
  3. Get ready for a new liner. Smooth and level out the sand on the bottom under where your liner used to be. Ensure the pool floor is level. Use tape to cover bolt holes where the wall panels connect. Clean any rust by scraping, sanding, and painting over it with a rust-hiding paint.
  4. New liner installation. This requires time, extra hands, and patience. Installing your liner on a warm day can help make the vinyl more pliable, helping it to spread into place. Adjust it to the correct position. If you have a beaded liner, place the beaded edge into the tracks. Make sure your seam lines are even to ensure correct placement. Then, get rid of extra air between the liner and the walls by using a shop vac.
  5. Sparkling, clean water. Keep running the vacuum until you have about 7 inches of water. Then turn it off and remove it as the pool continues to fill. Monitor your pool and reinstall any hardware, fittings and plumbing necessary.
