How to Protect Your Pool in Severe Weather

Thunder, lightning, wind, rain … a lot goes into the recipe for the perfect storm. While we can’t control which way the weather goes, we can prepare for it. At Bonnie & Clyde’s we know that your pool is like a member of your family, and we want to make sure you have everything you need to protect your pool in severe weather.

Don’t Drain

You may feel the need to drain your pool before a big storm hits, but actually, it’s much better to keep it full. When you drain your pool, you leave the walls and floor unprotected and susceptible to holes, scratches, and other damage from debris. You also risk your pool “floating” on a rising water table if flooding is particularly bad. Even though you may need to do some post-storm cleanup and chemical balancing, it’s much safer to leave your pool up and filled.

Uncover

Throwing on your pool’s cover may work if it’s just a little rain, but in severe weather, it’s best to leave it off. Strong winds and rain can lift the cover off, resulting in debris contamination anyway. Not to mention, you’re leaving your pool’s cover vulnerable to sharp branches and other flying objects. It will also be difficult to remove your cover after the storm if it’s holding a significant amount of water on the top.

After the Storm

Be prepared for some cleanup. You’ll almost definitely have to shock and balance your water after the weather has cleared up. If you have time to balance or add an algae controller before it hits, you may be able to save time later on. If you have an automatic pool cleaner, these little guys can make post-storm cleanup a breeze (pun intended).

With the proper tools and knowledge, you can protect your pool in severe weather, and Bonnie & Clyde’s Pools and Spas will be here to offer any assistance you need when it comes to being prepared.
